Hague's colorful and classic illustrations to these stories are wonderful. Includes "The Snow Queen", "The Ugly Duckling", "Thumbelina", 'The Little Mermaid" and five others. Very minor bumps to the lower tips, but otherwise clean, bright and sound. The jacket is rubbed and lightly edge worn, and there is a tear at foot of spine across the width of the spine. Later Printing, 1924 Hardback, small octavo, in blue-green cloth decorated in yellow and blue. [130] pages with four full page illustrations on coated paper by Peter Newell. Essentially a reader for third graders, it is subtitled: "An approved selection arranged for hom and supplementary reading in the third grade with an introduction by . ". Six well known classic stories recommended by various famous personages including Howard Pyle, Jane Addams, Hamilton Wright Mabie, Nicholas Murray Butler, Julia Ward Howe, and Henry Van Dyke. Newell's illustrations picture scenes from "The Ugly Duckling", "Sleeping Beauty", "Beauty and the Beast", and "Cinderella". The text is notably but evenly toned, there is a gift note on the half title, and the covers are lightly edge worn. Copyright page carries the Harper code D-Y. Early printing thus Green cloth decorated in red and green with cover pastedown illustration. Color illustration, a few of which are full page. Certainly one of the most attractive editions of this classic about a crippled prince blessed with a travelling cloak (think magic carpet). No indication of printing since the publisher's conventional method of providing that information was not yet in use. First Edition thus Small octavo, about 8 inches tall, in blue cloth lettered in gilt. Frontis and ten other illustrations, printed, not tipped in. This is the first U.S. trade edition of the book. The covers are lightly edgeworn; extremities a little bumped; covers generally rubbed with some dulling of the gilt titles, but they are still readable. Inside is clean and soundly bound but the paper is mildly toned and there is a previous owner note, detailing receipt at Christmas, 1924, in tiny letters, at the gutter of the title page. Hare, T92 (with no mention of a dustjacket implying that there wasn't one). SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR WITH AN IMPERSONAL INSCRIPTION. Tasha Tudor won two Caldecott awards over her career. This copy is clean and bright, with minor wear to the corners and some glue residue on the last page and front free end paper. There is some darkening to the covers at top and bottom. Signed on the title page, with a newspaper article on her visit to Denver in 1972 and some picture stamps of Tudor herself pasted near it. Owner's name on the front free end paper.
