First Edition Octavo, about 8.5 inches tall, in green cloth stamped in gilt and decorated in black. 338 pages illustrated by black and white drawings with frontis on coated paper, many illustrations are full page. Nice copy without jacket. James won the Newbery Award a few years earlier for Smoky, the Cow Horse. Inside is clean and sound but mildly and evenly toned. Foot of spine is a bit faded, and the bottom of the textblock has a couple of tiny spots of soiling. The jacket is very lightly extremity worn and has a tiny chip at the bottom of the front panel.
