First Edition Octavo, about 8.5 inches tall, in green cloth stamped in gilt and decorated in black. 338 pages illustrated by black and white drawings with frontis on coated paper, many illustrations are full page. Nice copy without jacket. James won the Newbery Award a few years earlier for Smoky, the Cow Horse. Inside is clean and sound but mildly and evenly toned. First Edition Large octavo, , about 9.5 inches tall, in brown cloth spine stamped in gilt with illustrated paper covered boards. 241 pages with 44 full page black and white drawings. A very impressive early book by the author and illustrator best known for Smoky, the Cow Horse which won a Newbery Medal and Lone Cowboy, his fictionalized autobiography. Inside is a little toned; previous owner name and date in pencil on front endpaper. Covers are not pretty with general soiling; spine moderately darkened leaving the lettering unreadable; corners worn through to the boards; light stain on the rear adjacent to the spine.
