Nice copy without jacket. James won the Newbery Award a few years earlier for Smoky, the Cow Horse. Inside is clean and sound but mildly and evenly toned. A very impressive early book by the author and illustrator best known for Smoky, the Cow Horse which won a Newbery Medal and Lone Cowboy, his fictionalized autobiography. Inside is a little toned; previous owner name and date in pencil on front endpaper. Covers are not pretty with general soiling; spine moderately darkened leaving the lettering unreadable; corners worn through to the boards; light stain on the rear adjacent to the spine.
